Savage: The Shard of Gosen

ShardOfGosen

The Project:

Savage: The Shard of Gosen is equal parts inspired by the Conan stories by Robert E. Howard, my fascination with Zelda II (the black sheep of the Zelda family, hehe), other games of its ilk (like Gargoyle’s Quest) and a healthy dose of general barbarian fetishism.

The final product will (hopefully) include a varied, somewhat open world to explore, an interesting little tale filled with machismo, magic and muscles, day/night cycle, overworld hunting/tracking, lots of action/platforming, fun melee system and some mild RPG elements (item use, leveling up, gear, crafting and the like).

The Team:

My name is Matt Fitzgerald and over the last year I’ve taken up work as a freelance artist, working on projects involving music, animation and film. I have been working on Savage: The Shard of Gosen for almost 4 years. It started out as a hobby project, trying to make a game for my then 5 year old brother. It’s grown in scope since then and is nearing completion, despite all sorts of wrenches thrown at it including an apartment fire (the game survived: yay!). The grant would help me cover things like submission and copyright fees, and living expenses.

Sky Arena

SkyArena

The Project:

Sky Arena is an arena flight shooter in which you become the most powerful jet pilot that the 90s ever saw. By now the demo includes a local multiplayer, a trench run mode, 3 different maps, various characters and jets, as well as an unique soundtrack that will get you pumped. In a nutshell, it reminds of the legendary Star Fox 64, but it is more than that – try and see yourself! Gather your friends and play four-player split screen to demonstrate your mastery over the controller. Besides working on the PC version, the demo is also available in the Ouya store.

The Team:

Hammer Labs is a small indie studio that was officially founded in May 2013 by Oliver Eberlei and Andreas Bendt. By now we released one commercial game, which was awarded at the German Developer Award 2012 in the category Newcomer. For different projects, like Sky Arena, we work together with some friends who help us out with the art and audio design.

Odium

Odium

The Project:

This game is the story of Odium, the hatred module, who manages to escape the corruption of his home, the Main Core. Him being the last chance for restoring the Main Core, left alone, Odium needs to rescue his fellow modules – Tristis(Sadness), Metus(Fear) and Gaudium(Joy) – and restore the Core from their corruption by playing through fun action-packed music-fueled levels that take place in four different and challenging environments, each representing a certain emotion linked to the function of the module it represents and defeat the corrupted module bosses. There is a total of four modules, each representing a certain emotion of the Main Core.

Influenced by Saul Bass’s style and color, the art style aims to have simple but effective shapes. Each environment including the gameplay and music reflects the dominating emotion of the upcoming boss.

FarSpace Studios is a software development company founded and operated by Marc McCann and Robert Blackburn. We make professional quality software and games independently of a publisher and don’t feel the need to spend millions of £’s on production. Playing games has been a lifelong passion of both Marc and Robert, coupled with our 20+ combined years of software development experience and sheer drive to succeed we believe we can make a positive impact on the market and create high quality titles that stand out from those created by other independent developers. Being small isn’t an excuse for making sub par software, it is just another obstacle to work around and in a lot of ways beneficial.

Myriad

Myriad

The Project:

Myriad is a game about making and breaking worlds, where you don’t just play but perform.

You build the stage for your performance, living geometry shaped by your actions and decisions. Space is malleable. You can grab the ground from under your feet and fly.

The rules are simple. Enemies chase you, and you must destroy them — but doing so only multiplies their numbers.

Defeated enemies leave behind space you can control, manipulate and detonate. Explode space in great chain reactions to upgrade your weapons and do it all again.

Your performance conducts a synthesized symphony, ebbing and flowing in tune with your every move, as you make a world. Then break it.

The Team:

My name is Erlend Grefsrud, and I have been developing games professionally since 2009, currently as independent developer and freelancer.

Myriad is my first solo project, the kind of game I got into development in the hopes of one day making. It’s an experiment in kinaesthetics, player agency and the plasticity of game rules.

SPACETRAIN

Spacetrain

The Project:

Oh no! After all manner of important spacework, our dutiful astronauts have found themselves scattered across the solar system, stranded on planets far from their homes. They can do naught but gaze upon the twinkling of their homeworlds against the blackness… until the SPACETRAIN arrives.

In a flash, it’s back out along the tracks, a daisy chain of astronauts in tow. Where a more conventional sort of train might slowly pull into its destination stop and ensure a careful unloading, the SPACETRAIN has no time for such dalliances. The most skilled SPACETRAIN engineers use inertia and timing to send their passengers on ahead, flinging them tumbling off through open space towards their destination. As long as they land back home, it’s a job well done. And there are ever more systems in need of the SPACETRAIN.

The Team:

Having spent many hours analyzing and enjoying games of all sorts, berv thought it was high time he got his feet wet with development. Hoo boy is there a lot to learn. But bit by bit it gets easier. Working alone, SPACETRAIN is an attempt to apply his learnings and push them through to a finished and enjoyable (and saleable?) product.

He was transporting powercores when his ship was attacked by space pirates. He must now travel this strange land, trying to find the 6 powercores, before the space pirates get their hands on them.

The Team:

I am Martyn, I have recently formed Zidas Studios Limited after being interested in Game Dev for several years. I am using Unity3D for the development of Solus and find it incredibly powerful. I am always up for chatting to developers and gamers via twitter :)

In Verbis Virtus

InVerbisVitrus

The Project:

In Verbis Virtus is a first person view video game that mixes action and puzzle elements in a fantasy setting, in the game you play as a wizard who can perform spells pronouncing magic formulas. The innovation introduced by this game is in the control system: the player must use a microphone to cast spells by actually saying the magic words.
While playing In Verbis Virtus you’ll find yourself completely unarmed in a dark dungeon that hides many dangers. The only way to overcome the obstacles that you’ll find is to learn the secrets of the arcane arts of magic through ancient texts that the protagonist finds along his path. These writings teach magic formulas which, if pronounced correctly, enable you to perform many spells. Using these powers in a creative way the player can solve puzzles, overcome traps and kill the enemies that try to hinder him.

The Team:

Indomitus Games is a group of young Italian artists and programmers who have joined forces to develop an innovative gaming product: In Verbis Virtus.
It all began as a university project, at the time we were just a few programmers so we needed to find people to help us with all the artistic aspects of a game (music, 3D and 2D graphics, etc…). The Indomitus team was mostly built contacting people through forums and social networks and it never stopped evolving. In Verbis Virtus is our first game as a team but during these years of development we learned a lot and we are still learning.
